“ Human beings are incredibly complex and their interaction with the surrounding environment is very unique. This intricate matrix of systems has to be considered, explored and adjusted in order to achieve a real and sustained improvement. ”

What is functional medicine?

IT IS AN EMERGING MODEL FOR THE TREATMENT OF CHRONIC DISEASE THAT OBEYS THE FOLLOWING PRINCIPLES:

Dynamic model of disease – while conventional medicine is based on a “static” concept where the patient, previously healthy, suddenly develops a disease, functional medicine considers the existence of a temporal continuum, during which the pathological processes develop in the background, often without symptoms, until they finally manifest. Therefore, this model allows an earlier diagnosis and intervention.

Investigative – focus on the underlying imbalance(s) at the origin of the problem. Instead of masking symptoms, the goal is to identify and correct the root cause.

Empowering – a partnership is established and the patient plays an active role in the healing process. With adequate guidance, the patient will be able to gain awareness and a better control of his health.

Promotes adaptation – humans are born with a fixed genetic code but it is our interaction with the surrounding environment that regulates gene expression (Epigenetics).

Evidence based – interventions supported by the latest research from peer-reviewed medical literature are preferred.

Integrative – Emphasizes the importance of diet and lifestyle, and combines the use of nutritional supplements, botanicals and pharmaceuticals.

How does it work?

A thorough investigation takes place in the initial visits, including: detailed questionnaires, medical history, physical exam and appropriate complementary diagnostic tests, directed at finding the underlying imbalances contributing to disease.

Generally, a hypoallergenic and nutrient dense diet is recommended to provide the necessary conditions for the healing process. As we are able to identify the specific pathological processes, targeted interventions are implemented to address them in a stepwise fashion. The treatment plan is dynamic and adjusted according to the patient’s response.

This approach involves a significant initial investment but intends to reduce downstream healthcare costs by preventing future manifestations of disease and, most importantly, to improve the patient’s wellbeing.

Who can benefit from it?

FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE IS THE RIGHT SOLUTION, IF YOU:

What conditions can it treat?

FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE CAN TREAT A WIDE VARIETY OF CONDITIONS, INCLUDING:

RESPIRATORY PROBLEMS – allergic rhinitis, chronic sinusitis, asthma.

CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE

HYPO AND HYPERTHYROIDISM
